The Vineyard El Riu (meaning “The River” in Catalan) is a 1 hectare vineyard (2.5 acres) in the town of El Molar in Priorat. We purchased this property at the end of 2004. This is an unusual vineyard in Priorat, as it sits on a slight slope above the Siurana River and although it is full of slate as is typical in the region, there is also a lot of gravel here, which is quite uncommon. The vineyard is planted to Carignan (Samso) vines that are over 100 years old! Yields are less than half a ton per acre. The 2009 The 2009 is similar in quality to our successful 2008, but is more forward and approachable, showing more fruit and softer tannins. Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate Reviewed by Luis Gutiérrez Issue Date: 28th Oct 2016 Emmanuel Kemiji is a Master Sommelier born in the US but raised in Madrid. He is also owner of Miura Vineyards in California. He started a small project in Priorat back in 2003 with some partners, including some friends from his time at the Ritz Carlton, some chefs, Sylvain Portay, Gerald Hirigoyen, Laurent Manrique and even some celebrities like Antonio Banderas. The project has kept a low profile and I previously had only heard the name but had never actually tasted the wines. They produce wines from Montsant and Priorat, as they own vineyards in both appellations, but none is subject to the official appellation of origin. The winery is located in the outskirts of Falset. Lisa Perroti-Brown met Kemiji in California and she was impressed by the wines from Priorat and got me in contact with him. I'm glad she did...
