Oc is a diminutive of Occitania, a historical region that traces its beginnings back to two millennia ago and covered southern France, northwestern Italy and northeastern Spain. We decided to use this name in honor of chef Laurent Manrique’s birthplace of Gascony, and Cataluna where the vineyard is located, both being a part of the “Pays d’Oc” at one point. The Vineyard This is an exciting new project by Master Sommelier Emmanuel Kemiji (Miura Vineyards & Clos Pissarra), chef Laurent Manrique (Millesime, Café de la Presse & Clos Pissarra), and his wife Michelle. The wine is from our tiny 1½ acre vineyard in the village of El Lloar located in Priorat. It is a blend of 3 new French oak barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and 1 new French oak barrel of Grenache (25%). The 2010 Although Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache are not often blended together, the ensuing marriage works amazingly well. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wines color, depth, structure and concentrated black fruit, while the Grenache lends aromatics and bright red fruit to the blend. Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate Reviewed by Luis Gutiérrez Issue Date: 28th Oct 2016 Emmanuel Kemiji is a Master Sommelier born in the US but raised in Madrid. He is also owner of Miura Vineyards in California. He started a small project in Priorat back in 2003 with some partners, including some friends from his time at the Ritz Carlton, some chefs, Sylvain Portay, Gerald Hirigoyen, Laurent Manrique and even some celebrities like Antonio Banderas. The project has kept a low profile and I previously had only heard the name but had never actually tasted the wines. They produce wines from Montsant and Priorat, as they own vineyards in both appellations, but none is subject to the official appellation of origin. The winery is located in the outskirts of Falset. Lisa Perroti-Brown met Kemiji in California and she was impressed by the wines from Priorat and got me in contact with him. I'm glad she did...
