The Fuentes family establishes the Rio Negro winery at the end of the nineties, fulfilling their
dream of elaborating a very unique wines and reviving the tradition of winegrowing in a town
that had subsisted on this art for centuries. The 42 hectares (100 acres) vineyard sits at 1000
meters (3,300ft) above sea level, in Cogolludo (Guadalajara), in the foothills of the Sierra de Ayllón, next to the stone villages of the "Arquitectura Negra" (Black Architecture), surrounded by forests of oak, holm oak, pine and picturesque rolling hills, and 30 miles from any other vineyard.
Varietals: 60% Tempranillo, 20% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.
Wine Making: Each varietal is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks with temperature control. Macerations for times ranging from 12 to 18 days depending on the characteristics of the variety. Malolactic fermentation is carried out.
Aging: Twelve months in barrels made from 60% French oak (Allier) and 50% American oak of medium tan and fine grain. Two thirds of the barrels are new, and one third are from the previous year.
Tasting Notes: Opaque ruby. Ripe cherry, dark berries and peppery spices on the fragrant nose and in the mouth. Juicy and precise, displaying good depth of flavor, with a hint of violet emerging with air. Closes on a taut, tangy note, leaving a white pepper accent behind.
