Claygate Vineyard is located in the coveted terroir of Ribbon Ridge AVA. The vineyards were originally planted in 2003. Located in northwest Oregon, Ribbon Ridge is a sub-appellation of the Willamette Valley AVA. Protected by geographical features to the north, south and west, Ribbon Ridge's grape-growing hillsides are slightly warmer and drier when compared to the adjacent valley floors. Ribbon Ridge soils are primarily sedimentary - a part of the Willakenzie soil series - and are of low fertility and ideal for growing high-quality wine grapes. Ribbon Ridge is 3.5-miles long by 1.75-miles wide rising 683 feet from the Chehalem Valley floor. Our wines are produced by a team that collectively has over 40 years of experience in Oregon Wine Country: Vineyard Manager Javier Marin and Winemaker Todd Hamina. Our Estate Pinot Noir is a blend of our 777 and 115 clones - a perfect example of why a winemaker blends. It brings out and balances the best qualities of each clone. Claygate Estate Vineyard veteran winemaker, Todd Hamina, makes excellent wines that are decidedly restrained in style and terroir-driven. With almost two decades of experience making ultra-low intervention, fantastic wines, Todd learnt from the greats, beginning in 1996 with three vintages at Archery Summit alongside icons in Oregon winemaking Gary Andrus and Sam Tannahill, and viticulturist Andy Humphrey; a stint at Elk Cove with Adam Campbell. Todd was hired as winemaker at Patton Valley Vineyard 2000, and worked there through 2004. He moved on to Maysara, in the coastal foothills, for the 2005 and 2006 vintages. Then he set out on his own. Hamina’s style is based around the inclusion of whole clusters of fruit (which encourages a spicy, earthy perfume to develop in the wine, as well as fine structure) and minimal use of new oak. Rating: 91 Points - Vinous, Josh Raynolds - October 2015 "Pinot Noir Brilliant red. Sexy black raspberry and cherry-cola scents are complemented by tea rose and cola, with a mineral element adding lift. Lively red fruit and floral pastille flavors are accented by a touch of pepperiness on the back half. Closes silky and long, with very good clarity and smooth tannins that fade quickly into the wine's fruit."
