Tres Cruces was one of the first wines I tried from Coyote Canyon and a blend I was eager to get a chance to work with. The wine is a Rhone style red blend using Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache. I think of Coyote Canyon Vineyard as a Cabernet Sauvignon site but have been surprised and excited about all the different varietals we have growing at the vineyard. The first Tres Cruces blend I tried was Syrah heavy and I have been looking forward to blending up my own version of this wine. I had plenty of each component to work with and made many versions of this blend before coming up with this final mix. The Syrah is consistently big and smooth, and I thought it should be the heavy hitter in this blend. After that I imagined the Grenache, with its acidity and bright fruit, would be the next component but as I blended things together it was the Mourvedre that added more depth and body to the wine. The wine was barrel aged for 18 months and then filtered and bottled. This wine is ready to drink now.
