Tenuta Terraviva sits in a pristine area of the Teramo province in northern Abruzzo, nestled in the hills of Tortoreto. The influence of the Adriatic sea, the soils, the winds, the grapes, and the philosophy, all come together to create something incredibly special for this zone: a natural winery focused on letting the grapes show themselves purely each year. Certified organic by the Italian Suolo e Salute, self-sufficient energy, as well as active members of the Slow Wine movement, Terraviva’s concept at the winery is very artisanal and inspiring. Only hand harvested fruit from their 25 total hectares of vines come in for a very gentle process, including native yeast ferments, no oak for aging, and minimal sulfur use at bottling, to list a few of the standards this small family holds themselves true to. The unique style of their white and red varietals prove to be exciting and fresh, as their wines showcase savory minerality and salinity, giving depth and variety to the Abruzzo region’s blossoming wine scene. CO2 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is an absolutely captivating bottle of fresh Montepulciano that was made in the Carbonic Maceration method. Each year, the grapes come from the same Espalier trained (now 22-years-old) vineyard, and were hand- harvested in September to come into the cellar. Trapped in tank with only CO2 (thus the name), fermentation breaks down the sugars from the inside of the grapes in order to make the freshest and most approachable style of Montepulciano on the market. After time in tank to mellow and come together a bit, the wine was bottled and showcases such dynamic fruit, with laser-like freshness, a natural tasting complexity, and a length that is compelling and exciting. A wonderful bottle of wine to sit on a table with a plethora of different styles of food, the CO2 is a great talking point for any quaffing situation.
