The Vineyard: 2014 was my fifth vintage working with Karen and Chris London of Spring Hill Vineyard. Their vineyard is a sandy loam site on a west-facing hillside tucked between Petaluma and the northern tip of Point Reyes. Right in the center of the Petaluma Gap, it is cool and windy during the growing season. Leaf pulling in the fruit zone isn't necessary; the wind shreds the canopy enough by veraison to get ample light on the clusters. Twenty acres are planted with Swan, 115, Pommard, 667, 777 and Calera clones. Planting occurred in 2001, 2002 and 2003. The Londons run Scottish Highland Beef cattle on their adjacent acreage and farm the grapes primarily by themselves composting and hand-pulling weeds. Winemaking: All of the fruit was crushed by foot, whole cluster and fermented with indigenous yeast and no sulfur addition in open top fermenters. I pressed the wine directly into a mixture of once-used French barrels and let it sit 11 months prior to a light filtration and bottling in August 2015. Technical Data: 89 cases produced Release date: March 2016 Alcohol: 12.5% Ageing: 11 months in once-used French oak barrels Clone: 100% Pommard Tasting Notes: "Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose offers a complex array of aromas including red berries, white pepper, earthy flora and a hint of tobacco. The tannins and acidity battle the fruit for supremacy in this wine that is spear headed by flavors of dark red cranberries, strawberries and cherries. A touch of anise-laced oak adds seasoning. The wine’s hi-strung acidity creates an uplifting finish." -The Prince of Pinot
