Gamay is scarcely planted in the Willamette, but it grows superbly well here. This 2017 bottling is a blend of four vineyards, with different soils types--volcanic, marine sedimentary and glacial loess--and different micro-climates all within the northern Willamette Valley. Working with Gamay, I like to do a lot of whole cluster fermentation, some of it fully carbonic. I love the aromatics that this gives and the textural tension from the stems. This wine was aged mostly in neutral (8-10 years old) barrels, 8 months of aging sur lie. Harvested quite late last year, October 30, it shows that cru-Beaujolais quality Gamay, with both delicacy and compelling depth can be produced in the Willamette.
